The nominees for the 2019 Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards have been announced, with comedians Alfred Kainga and Long John both bagging the Savanna Pan-African Comic of the Year Award nominations respectively.
Alfred Kainga, who is based in Dallas, in the US, expressed his excitement on his twitter account, tweeting that this is an achievement not only for him but for Zimbabwe at large.
The “Funny from A to Z” comedian has achieved much success in his career since its inception in 2005. Amoungst some of his achievements is reaching the semi-final stage of the 2014 Shaq All-Star Comedy Competition, being a finalist in the Funniest Comic in Texas Competition in the same year, and also making his television debut on Comedy Central in 2016 where he performed in Kevin Hart’s “Hart of the City”.
His fellow countryman and industry colleague, Long John has gained tremendous reputation in the South African Entertainment industry where he has performed at prestigious festivals such as Oppikkopi and Park Acoustics. Having performed alongside the likes of Loyiso Gola and Berry Hilton, he also boasts touring in the UK and coming second in the Cavendish comedy contest where he was up against 19 other comedians.
With congratulatory messages from fans and colleagues, Twitter user @LawrenceMashiri simply wanted to know from Kainga if they (the fans) needed to vote, because he is ready.
All we can say is, whether the decision is made by the public, the judges or by other comedians, it is going to be a tough one and may the most deserving comedian win.
The Award ceremony is scheduled to take place on the 7th of September at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg.
